New Process for Patient Identification

Emergency department to photograph patients for improved safety

Columbus, Ind. -   Beginning January 13, all patients in Columbus Regional Hospital's Emergency Department will have their photo taken during the registration process. The new photo process is to further improve patient safety. The photo will be included on the patient's armband and other documents in the patient's medical record.

"Patient safety includes care while a patient is here in the hospital, as well as safety to protect patients against identity theft during the registration process," says Susan Rust, Director of Patient Financial & Registration Services. "This new process is one that other hospitals are also beginning to implement as we continue to look for ways to improve patient safety."

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States and impacts all industries especially health care. "When a patient's identity is stolen it may result in a life or death situation if the medical information of multiple patients becomes combined into one medical record," says Rust.
