CRH Receives National Nursing Quality Award

American Nurses Association Award for Outstanding Nursing Quality Based on Patient Outcomes

Columbus, Ind. -   The American Nurses Association (ANA) has recognized Columbus Regional Hospital with the Outstanding Nursing Quality Award, one of only six hospitals nationwide recognized. Columbus Regional was recognized for having outstanding patient outcomes tied directly to high quality nursing care. The award winners are:

  • Columbus Regional Hospital, Columbus, IN - Community Hospital
  • The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD - Academic Medical Center
  • Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, CO - Teaching Hospital
  • Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, IN - Pediatric Hospital
  • MossRehab, Elkins Park, PA - Rehabilitation Hospital
  • Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic of UPMC, Pittsburgh, PA - Psychiatric Hospital
The award-winning hospitals are among more than 1,500 hospitals that participate in ANA's National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), the nation's most comprehensive database of nursing-care outcomes measures.

"Columbus Regional Hospital exemplifies the commitment, leadership, data analysis and efficient use of resources that are needed by nursing executives and bedside nurses to produce the best possible patient outcomes," said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton. "The NDNQI program is all about using evidence from the reporting of outcomes to improve nursing care practices, staffing and systems for care delivery, and Columbus Regional Hospital has achieved that at a high level."

The NDNQI database has over 15,000 nursing units that compare their performance to similar units at other hospitals regionally, statewide, and nationwide. Columbus Regional Hospital demonstrated superior patient outcomes and high nurse job satisfaction on 18 nursing-sensitive performance indicators, such as hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, patient falls with injury, infections acquired as a result of hospitalization, and nurse turnover.

Columbus Regional Hospital is a not-for-profit, regional hospital that serves a 10-county region in southeastern Indiana with 1,725 employees, 225 physicians on medical staff, and 250 volunteers. Columbus Regional is nationally recognized for its high quality care as noted as the winner of the American Hospital Association's Quest for Quality Prize in 2007, the highest quality honor awarded by the hospital industry; and is a Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals, Modern Healthcare's 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare, and is Indiana's first Magnet designated hospital for outstanding nursing care.
