Lung Institute First to Conduct New Asthma Procedure

Columbus, Ind. -   The nationally recognized Lung Institute at Columbus Regional Hospital has successfully completed the first ever Bronchial Thermoplasty procedure in Indiana, and the third procedure performed in the United States since the device passed FDA approval in early May of 2010.

The Alair® Bronchial Thermoplasty System is a new treatment for severe persistent asthma in patients 18 years and older whose asthma is not well controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists. The procedure works by applying low level heat to the smooth muscle airways of asthma patients. After the treatment cycle, the procedure has been shown to dramatically improve the symptoms of asthma patients and also significantly reduce the need for asthma medications. The Lung Institute at Columbus Regional has been chosen as one of the initial providers of this new and revolutionary procedure..
