Nurses donate to Mammography Assistance Program

Columbus, Ind. -   The southeastern Indiana chapter of the Indiana Emergency Nurse Association recently made a $1,720 donation to the Columbus Regional Hospital Mammography Assistance Program.

The Mammography Assistance Program ensures that women who meet federal poverty guidelines can receive a mammogram for $5. Funds are managed by the Columbus Regional Hospital Foundation and funded by a Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant and from community donations.

Much of the recent ENA fundraising work was done by Columbus Regional Hospital Emergency Department nurses. Paula Rothrock, an Emergency Department nurse and breast cancer survivor, led the effort. Rothrock and her husband, Paul, designed and sold 175 T-shirts for the cause.

"We took on the shirt adventure to promote breast cancer awareness, the MAP program and emergency nurses," Rothrock said. "Raising awareness is wonderful. Making it possible for others to get mammograms has special meaning to all of us."

Deana Tuell, manager and breast health navigator at the Columbus Regional Hospital Breast Health Center, said the donation will help the center work toward its mission.

"It means everything to help women afford yearly screenings. The benefits of mammography for early detection and treatment of breast cancer are very significant," Tuell said. "Personal finances shouldn't interfere with that. All women age 40 and over should have the same access. MAP is helping us meet that need."

Ongoing Breast Health Center Fundraiser

The Breast Health Center is hosting an ongoing fundraiser called "Undecorate the Tree" for the Mammography Assistance Program. The center is selling donated Christmas decorations, jewelry and other locally-made crafts. All proceeds from the sale of these items will go to MAP.
