|Columbus, Ind. - Columbus family medicine physician Dr. Amanda Dornfeld was recently named Physician of the Year by the Indiana Perinatal Network. |
Dr. Dornfeld received the Breastfeeding Award of Excellence at the Breastfeeding Success: Translating Trends into Practice conference held on October 14 in Indianapolis. The award is given to an Indiana physician who is dedicated to supporting and educating patients about breastfeeding.
"Mandy is the gold standard of physicians," said Tina Cardarelli, Indiana State Breastfeeding Coordinator. "She is a true student of breastfeeding and is not afraid to ask for help from others when she is faced with particular difficult breastfeeding concern."
Cardarelli said Dr. Dornfeld attends numerous breastfeeding educational events each year.
"I am always impressed by her passion for this subject and her willingness to learn all she can to help her patients," Cardarelli said. "We all look to our doctors for health advice. So having a doctor in the community who is supportive and understanding of the importance of breastfeeding is invaluable. Dr. Dornfeld is helping her patients understand breastfeeding's role in decreasing obesity, lowering cancer rates and generally improving people's health over a lifetime."
Along with her duties as a family medicine physician at Sandcrest Family Medicine and a member of the Columbus Regional Hospital medical staff, Dr. Dornfeld also serves on the Breastfeeding Coalition of Bartholomew County which strives to improve public health by promoting and supporting breastfeeding through education, outreach and collaboration.
"She is the most influential member of the breastfeeding coalition," said Beth Morris, Director of Community Health Partnerships at Columbus Regional Hospital. "She always has time for coalition activities, whether working with businesses in the community or networking with other physician colleagues. And she is the physician champion for the Columbus Regional Hospital Baby Friendly Initiative."
