Columbus Regional Hospital Adds Clinical Affiliation for Heart Surgery

Columbus -   Columbus Regional Hospital has selected Clarian Cardiovascular to develop a new affiliation for heart surgery. The new clinical affiliation will provide physician staffing coverage from Clarian Cardiovascular for cardiac surgical procedures at Columbus Regional Hospital.

This affiliation ensures the continued full-time availability of heart surgery, while interventional cardiology services will continue to be provided by Indiana Heart Physicians-Columbus. Clarian Cardiovascular stood out as Indiana's only program to be ranked in the top 50 national programs for Heart & Heart Surgery by U.S. News & World Report.

"We are pleased to work with Clarian Cardiovascular to continue to provide excellent heart care services for patients across our region," says Jim Bickel, Chief Executive Officer at Columbus Regional Hospital. "This approach gives our patients access to a larger network of top quality resources with services continuing to be provided directly in our region."

Since 2002, Columbus Regional Hospital's Heart Center has offered a broad spectrum of cardiac care, including 24/7 interventional cardiology and open-heart surgery. It is the only hospital in southeastern Indiana to offer this scope of cardiac care.

"Timely access to heart services is important to patients across our region when minutes matter in a heart emergency. We are proud that we outperform national standards for heart care, such as door to balloon time to open heart blockages, and this clinical affiliation will further help streamline care for our heart patients," says Dr. Kevin Preuss, board certified cardiologist with Indiana Heart Physicians-Columbus.

"This collaboration enables us to advance cardiovascular medicine for patients through expert cardiac care, particularly in cardiovascular surgery," said Dr. Arthur Coffey, director of Cardiovascular Surgery, Clarian Health. "We are pleased to work together to improve the heart health and quality of life in Bartholomew County and surrounding areas."

A memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed soon and details will be finalized early next year.

"Healthcare reform is prompting radical changes in the delivery of healthcare, and hospitals are collaborating on clinical services in new ways," says Bickel. "Different approaches are being taken across the country. Our approach is to work closely with a tertiary health system to extend a specific clinical service to best meet patient needs, as we are doing for the heart surgery clinical affiliation, but remain an independent hospital business."

In early 2011, Clarian Health will change its name to Indiana University Health in an effort to better identify the hospital system's unique brand of nationally recognized health care and reinforce its partnership with the world-renowned Indiana University School of Medicine. Clarian Cardiovascular will be known as Indiana University Health Cardiovascular.
