Columbus Regional Hospital and Indiana Blood Center will host a community blood drive on Friday, October 5.
The drive will be open to the public from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Meeting Room 1, which is located in the hospital’s basement.
Indiana Blood Center must collect 550 units every day to supply over 60 Indiana hospitals including Columbus Regional Hospital.
Every day approximately 40,000 units of blood are used throughout the country to help patients who have been diagnosed with illness such as cancer, leukemia and sickle cell disease. In treating chronic disease and illness, many people may require up to 200 units of blood.
One unit of donated blood can be separated into four components and can help as many as three different hospital patients.
