Excellence in Chest Pain Care
National Chest Pain Center Accreditation

Columbus Regional Hospital has received re-accreditation as an Accredited Chest Pain Center by The Society of Chest Pain Centers.  The hospital first received this national accreditation in 2004, and has been re-accredited with Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI) designation, which demonstrates the use of PCI as the main treatment strategy for heart attacks.   Columbus Regional Hospital is one of only seven hospitals in Indiana to have this designation level for chest pain care.

Columbus Regional Hospital received Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI) accreditation for demonstrating quality cardiac care and quick response time using a set of stringent treatment criteria.  The Society of Chest Pain Center's accreditation process ensures hospitals meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in acute cardiac medicine.  The accreditation process includes on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society.

More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain.  The Society of Chest Pain Center's goal is to significantly reduce the mortality rate from heart attacks by educating the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time it takes to receive treatment, and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.  Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 dying annually of heart disease.

Heart attack care begins with transport by ambulance or helicopter, to treatment in the Emergency Department, Cardiology, and Interventional Cardiology areas.  Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is also known as angioplasty, which may or may not include stent placement.

The other hospitals in Indiana with Chest Pain Center accreditation with PCI are Deaconness Hospital in Evansville, Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, and Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Terre Haute Regional Hospital, Deaconess Gateway Hospital, and Riverview Hospital in Noblesville.
