Teeth and Blood Vessel Disease

Teeth and Blood Vessel Disease

Tooth loss caused by gum disease may be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Stroke Association in 2003. The initial results of an ongoing study show that 60 percent of those missing 10 or more teeth had plaque buildup in the carotid arteries (the blood vessels that lead to the brain). Of those in the study who were not missing teeth, 45 percent had carotid artery plaque.
