Throughout Columbus Regional Health, it is our children's services goal to make each child's visit as comfortable as possible.
We have a dedicated 11-bed pediatrics unit for the inpatient care of infants and children through age seventeen. Children's services has a specially trained nursing and support staff providing care that supports the physical, mental, psychosocial, developmental and spiritual needs of the pediatric patient and family. Some of the most common illnesses and injuries that we care for include dehydration, asthma, sepsis, diabetes, neurological disorders and orthopedic injuries.
Each child who is admitted to the pediatric clinic unit receives a special "Pal" doll that is hand made by community volunteers. The "Pal" doll helps children to cope with their hospital stay through medical play and provides a source of comfort and security. Children can also be educated about their own treatment or procedure as nurses demonstrate on the "Pal" doll first. Dolls may have casts, IV's, surgery bandages or oxygen masks. Children can even practice giving the dolls injections and drawing blood.
