Columbus Regional Hospital has been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country in the care of stroke patients.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded Columbus Regional Hospital with the Primary Stroke Care Certification. Columbus Regional Hospital was the second hospital in Indiana to receive this coveted certification. Only seven Indiana healthcare facilities have this national Primary Stroke Center designation. This exemplifies how our stroke team uses national best practice guidelines to provide top quality care and significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients. So whenever you are presented with treatment options, an accredited Primary Stroke Center like Columbus Regional Hospital is your best choice.
Another example is our ability to effectively administer tPA. Although not everyone who has a stroke is eligible for the drug, it's the only drug approved by the FDA to dissolve blood clots in the brain. tPa can reduce or eliminate neurological damage from the stroke.
Following a Stroke
Following a stroke, the caregivers at the Stroke Center start therapy on day one. Although many hospitals start in the first 48 hours, we believe, and it is supported by medical literature, that your best chance for a successful recovery is when therapy begins in the first 24 hours. One way the Stroke Center can do this is with our state-of-the-art body support unit, an apparatus that un-weights a patient and allows them to start movement regardless of strength or muscular control.
From community education, to treatment and therapy, our self-management model combined with the national standards and guidelines that we follow, the Stroke Center delivers more successful patient outcomes.
