Dr. Steve Champion was a strong proponent of education. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from DePauw University as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and from IU School of Medicine as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. After completing his residency at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Dr. Champion eventually joined Emergency Physicians Incorporated of Columbus, Indiana at Columbus Regional Health (CRH) as an Emergency Physician, and was a partner with the group while serving as Medical Director of Information Services. Following his retirement from medicine, he became the full time Director of System Medical Informatics for CRH until his untimely death in 2020.

To honor Dr. Champion’s educational journey, his wife of 36 years, Melanie, established the Stephen P. Champion Memorial Award for Healthcare Professional Advancement Fund with Columbus Regional Health Foundation. The fund will provide awards to those who are accepted and attend either an accredited institution of higher learning or a program administering advanced training (MD, PA, NP, RN, BSN, PT, OT, EMT-P, IT).  Applicants must be a Bartholomew County resident, an employee of Columbus Regional Health, in good academic and/or professional standing and demonstrate financial need.

Should you wish to make a gift to benefit the award, send your contribution to: CRHF, Attn: Dr. Stephen P. Champion Fund, 2400 E. 17th Street, Columbus, IN 47201. Or, provide a donation online at www.crh.org/donate.
