Five Things to Know About the 2022 Diabetes Guidelines
Every year, the American Diabetes Association updates its guidelines for diabetes care. They look at the most recent research and technologies in order to refine the best practices for treating and preventing diabetes.
Here’s what you should know about the 2022 guidelines:
- Screening recommendations. Adults who are overweight or obese and have one or more risk factors—like a relative with diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., should be screened. All adults, regardless of risk factors, should start diabetes screenings at age 35. Repeat this at least every three years.
- Tech-savvy tips. Consider digital technologies such as mobile apps, simulation tools and digital coaching. Research shows these are just as effective as in-person care in helping manage diabetes.
- Focus on fiber. If you have diabetes, choose carbohydrates that are minimally processed and full of fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. Consume at least 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories you eat. Also, avoid added sugars.
- Pregnancy recommendations. Women with risk factors should be screened for diabetes before 15 weeks of gestation. And even if you’re not at risk for diabetes, it’s still a good idea to get a screening at your first prenatal visit.
- Genetic testing. Anyone who was diagnosed with diabetes before 6 months old should undergo genetic testing. The results will help your healthcare team understand how to best evaluate and treat you moving forward.
