Andrea Mernitz, MD, has been a primary care physician for more than 20 years and has always enjoyed the daily interactions she has with patients and understanding how every aspect of their lives affects their health. She currently serves as the medical director at MyCare Family Med, a Columbus Regional Health physician practice.

In her role, Dr. Mernitz said that each day is different, and she loves caring for the variety of patients she sees. “I love the science of medicine, but have learned how the art of medicine can be just as, or more, important,” she said. Dr. Mernitz enjoys working with her team and has great respect for the community of providers she has come to know over the years in Columbus.

In response to COVID-19, MyCare Family Med and other Columbus Regional Health practices implemented telehealth as a way to continue seeing patients but keeping them safe in their homes. Telehealth uses digital technologies, such as computers and mobile devices, to access healthcare services remotely and manage a patient’s care. Dr. Mernitz, along with other providers and staff, also stepped up to work at one of our Respiratory Clinics, which was established specifically to see patients with cough and fever symptoms.

Dr. Mernitz said that COVID-19 has been challenging for patients in many ways. Some have neglected their own healthcare needs due to fears of contracting the virus. Others have experienced anxiety and depression due to lost jobs and health insurance. She encourages patients to schedule their healthcare appointments to help actively address their individual needs.

Dr. Mernitz said that patients should know that the team is taking all precautions to make them safe when they come to the office, and that includes thorough room cleaning, no waiting rooms, and social distancing. Staff and patients enter the office wearing masks and have their temperature checked, and patients with COVID-19 symptoms are treated in a separate area. “We have made extensive changes in the office for the safety of patients and staff,” she said.
