Hospital employee recognized for patient advocacy

Columbus -   Columbus Regional Hospital Patient Representative Merlyn Bartlett recently received the Ann Barrett Patient Advocacy Excellence Award from the Indiana Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocacy.

The award is given to an ISHCA member who provides outstanding service to a medical center or hospital focusing on patient advocacy and customer service.

Along with his duties as Patient Representative, Bartlett also serves as an on-call chaplain and an in-house Spanish language interpreter. He also volunteers for the Volunteers in Medicine clinic for Spanish-speaking patients and for the Spanish-speaking diabetes education support group.

Bartlett said he was honored to receive the award. "I once had a social studies teacher who used to say, 'Service to others is the rent we pay for our time on earth,'" he said. "Over the years I have come to see the wisdom in this saying. I also believe that what we do for the patient is more important that what we do to the patient."

ISHCA is a state affiliate of the Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocacy which is a not-for-profit healthcare organization dedicated to individuals interested in advocacy as well as patient representatives, guest relations professionals, physicians, nurses, social workers and others currently employed in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, home health agencies, long-term care facilities and other health-related organizations.
