Overview

Our goal at Columbus Regional Health is to be doing procedures as well as any hospital in the country. The da Vinci® Si Surgical System gives us this capability. We are very proud to be able to offer our patients the benefits that the acquisition of this technology offers. The minimally invasive surgery we are able to provide means smaller incisions, faster healing times, improved patient outcomes and shorter hospital stays.

Faster healing after frequently performed surgeries.

Recent advances in surgical technology have made robotics-assisted surgery the most effective way to accomplish many common procedures in a less invasive and therefore less painful way. Our use of the robotic system has quickly emerged as a clearly better option, from both a patient’s perspective and from a surgeon’s standpoint, than what many traditional surgeries and conventional laparoscopic procedures can offer.

Almost all of our gynecological procedures are performed with the aid of robotics.

Because hysterectomy is the second most common surgical procedure for women in the U.S., this is a predictable need in our community. Some estimates say that one third of women in the U.S. will have a hysterectomy by age 60. In order to provide state-of-the-art care in this arena, our gynecological surgeons all operate with the aid of robotics. They have gained comprehensive experience in the use of robotic surgery and are able to treat a wide range gynecological conditions and cancer.

Surgical mastery, close to home.

Robotics technology brings a heightened level of skill and proficiency to every surgeon’s natural capabilities. With four surgeons qualified to operate using this system here at CRH, rest assured you’ll be receiving world-class level care, right here in Columbus, Indiana.

Our Capabilities

CRH surgeons are able to perform even the most complex, delicate procedures through very small incisions and with remarkable precision, utilizing the da Vinci® Surgical System. This advanced technology can be used for a multitude of surgery needs, often including, but not limited to gynecological and thoracic. We are proud to have four robotics-aided surgeon specialists on staff able to perform these minimally invasive procedures: Dr. George Albers, Dr. Daniel Davis, Dr. Degaulle Haile, and Dr. Brian Williams.

Can a robot really perform better than a surgeon?

No, but a surgeon can perform better with the help of robotics. Robotic surgery systems are advanced machines that are always under the control of a highly trained surgeon with well-trained healthcare professionals assisting at all times. They are equipped with special instruments, such as scissors and needle holders, that are attached to robotic arms. These arms even have “wrists” that copy the movement of a real arm. The surgeon can operate these arms from a remote area that includes a computer and high-resolution video monitor. Combined, these features make it easier for surgeons to complete very delicate procedures with greater precision and dexterity.

Technology that offers more than meets the eye.

Surgeons are provided an enhanced three dimensional, high definition view of what they are operating on, that is magnified by up to ten times. The visual clarity of tissue and anatomy that is achieved is simply unparalleled. Additionally, a dual optical console allows for a second surgeon to provide assistance, if desired.

Dexterity. Precision. Even an extra hand!

For complex, multi-site surgery, an additional robotic "arm" can be employed by the surgeon to gain yet another type of expanded capability.
