The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), narrowing of coronary arteries. These are the blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. The condition is also called coronary heart disease (CHD). CAD is usually caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque inside the coronary arteries. These plaques are made up of fatty deposits and fibrous tissue. Atherosclerosis also can trigger formation of a blood clot inside a narrowed coronary artery. Sudden stoppage of blood flow in a coronary artery usually leads to heart attack, causing significant damage to the heart. An estimated 80.7 million adults — or one in three — in the United States have cardiovascular disease. Heart disease is the nation's leading killer, claiming nearly 2,400 Americans each day. CAD is the most common chronic, life-threatening illness in most of the world’s developed nations.

The goal of this presentation is to educate people about common manifestations of heart disease, identify risk factors, prevention of heart disease and when to seek medical attention.
