TOPIC: Effects of Heroin Abuse among Youth: The Impact of Addiction and Recovery
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, heroin use in America has been on the rise since 2007. Heroin overdoses are increasing in local Indiana communities and this epidemic is bringing devastation to families and killing children and young adults at staggering rates. As society members, family members, youth workers and care providers, it is important to not only be educated about the impact of heroin use and abuse among youth but also about the disease of addiction and addiction recovery.
During this lunch presentation, attendees will hear personal testimony and professional education about addiction and recovery as well as learn about local trends and the impact on the community. Participants will:
 gain knowledge and awareness about the current heroin epidemic and the disease of addiction;
 increase knowledge on how to work with individuals and families effected by heroin;
 learn how to help break down the stigma of addiction and create a culture of hope and recovery; and
 hear from law enforcement and other area leaders about local efforts and initiatives.

SPEAKER: Laci Giboney, LSW Laci Giboney is a licensed social worker concentrating in mental health and addictions and is also 10 years in recovery from addiction. She will share her personal story and her professional experience in an effort to raise awareness and bring hope.
