Please share your story of why your nurse is so special:

On January 25^th, our world changed forever. We welcomed our sweet baby boy, August “Gus” into this world. The pediatrician came in and did her assessment, and said “I don’t know if you know much about Down syndrome, but I am pretty certain he has it.” My husband and I were in complete shock. Down syndrome does not run in either family, and no abnormalities or heart defects were detected on our ultrasounds. We were devastated. Our dreams of a “normal” life for our sweet boy were crushed. But from the moment the news was delivered, Shelby was there. Her soft, sweet, gentle presence brought so much comfort. When I was finally able to get out of bed after delivery, she walked me to the bathroom, allowed me to cry and express my feelings without judgment or interjection. Although much of the night of our delivery was a blur, I will never forget what she told me. “I know it is a lot right now, but GOD chose you to be Gus’s parents. And he created him for you.” Since that night, whenever I am overwhelmed with what is to come, I think of Shelby’s words and begin to find peace again. GOD knew I needed her that night. And I am forever grateful for that. The next day, Shelby was back, but she wasn’t our nurse. Shortly after shift change, she came in to visit. She sat down and asked how we were doing. There was such sincerity in her voice. She said, “I went home this morning and couldn’t sleep. You guys were on my mind. So, I started to look for some resources for you.” She provided a packet full of information she had printed off so we wouldn’t go home feeling so lost. She did not have to do that, but she did; that is the kind of wonderful person she is. When her shift was over, she stopped by one more time. She was off the next couple of days, and we knew we most likely wouldn’t see her again. In a world of COVID, when hugs are “illegal” she asked to hug me. I gladly welcomed it. We talked about my sweet Gus and how special he truly is. And before she left she said, “You and your family are in my prayers.” To know someone is intentionally praying for us means the world. We will never be able to thank Shelby enough for the care and compassion she showed to us in just a few short days. She will be in our hearts and a part of Gus’s story forever.
