Cassie Large has always loved cleaning, which has suited her well working in Environmental Services. She joined CRH in 2007 as an attendant, was named team lead in 2008, and became education coordinator in the department about a decade later. Today she is manager of the department, which she has held since the spring of last year.
As manager, Cassie is responsible for making sure her team cleans and sanitizes all areas properly. That includes cleaning the operating room after surgeries, after patient discharges, and throughout the Hospital. “We get calls for STAT cleans for surgery or dismissals…all kinds of things, honestly,” she said. Cassie also works with various vendors on obtaining necessary supplies. Somewhat new to the manager role, Cassie said she is “still learning,” which is something she likes about the hospital – “you’re always learning something,” she said.
Environmental Services has approximately 75 employees – part-time and full-time, including students. The department hires employees as young as 16, which they started doing a couple of years ago, something Cassie said has worked pretty well. In addition to cleaning and sanitizing areas throughout the Hospital, the team also works in the Sleep Lab and Mental Health. On average, the team completes 1,600 discharge cleanings per month and anywhere from 20-60 or more STAT cleans, which are cleanings that are needed right away. That’s in addition to the different department/areas they regularly clean in the hospital, including the main hallways and bathrooms, Endoscopy, and the Cath Lab.
Prior to joining CRH, Cassie’s most recent job was working in a factory. “I wasn’t made for factory work,” she said. A friend of hers was working at CRH and loved it and recommended Environmental Services to Cassie. It’s been a great fit for her. “I see myself retiring here,” she said. While enjoying cleaning certainly helps, Cassie also likes the atmosphere at CRH and working with her team. “I love all of my coworkers. I really like EVS,” she said. They pitch in together.”
Cassie said for anyone interested in an environmental services-type job, she recommends CRH. “I think it’s a great team to work with, and I love the job that we do,” she added. “EVS is kind of like the backbone to the hospital. If we didn’t do our job, nobody else could do theirs.”
Outside of CRH, Cassie likes to read, swim, and spend time outdoors.
Thank you for choosing CRH as your place to work, Cassie! We’re glad you are part of the team!
