Workforce Spotlight: Nick Muir, RN, Clinical Documentation Specialist

While living in Las Vegas, Nevada, Nick Muir had Columbus, Indiana, marked on a map as a place to visit. He had read about Columbus in an article highlighting places worth seeing. Born in Utah, Nick has lived in various areas of the country. When he and his family decided to leave Las Vegas, they chose Columbus as the next place to live.

“I was looking at the map and was drawn to Columbus,” Nick said, even though no one in his family had ever been to Columbus. He joined CRH, sight unseen, in October 2020. In his current role, Nick is a clinical documentation specialist and registered nurse in Health Information. His work includes chart reviews for quality and billing purposes. “We make sure that all of the care provided to the patient is documented,” he said.

Working for a large for-profit hospital group in Las Vegas, Nick saw a lot of cost-cutting and “profit for profit’s sake” that he didn't like. He likes that CRH is a community hospital.  “My favorite thing about here is that we are community-focused. Almost everyone lives in the community and serves the community,” he said.

Nick also likes the opportunities employees have to further their careers. “I love that if you have an interest in something, they want to develop you,” he said. Earlier in his career at CRH, Nick talked with Director of System Clinical Practice and Education Daniel Noel about some of his aspirations. Daniel presented him with some opportunities that aligned with his aspirations and also introduced him to others in the organization. “I see that with a lot of people here. If you’re interested in something and have a passion for it, they’ll help you get there, Nick said. Case in point: he currently chairs Nursing Shared Governance. The group, which includes about 45 individuals across various departments, meets monthly to discuss best practices and quality initiatives. “It’s a great opportunity to work alongside co-workers I might not interact with and create improvements that impact patient care and employee satisfaction,” Nick shared.

Nick and his family love living in Columbus. They purchased a house in 2021 and plan to stay long-term. “We’ve just flourished here,” he said. Nick also loves working at CRH. “I intend to retire from here. I can’t imagine working anywhere else. I love the people. I love the system,” he said.
