Celebrating Barb Harmon's 65-Year Career at CRH

On September 1, 1960, Barb Harmon clocked in for her first Food Service shift at Bartholomew County Hospital. Sixty-five years later, she continues to clock in at the department.

Barb started part-time in the dish room and as a relief person. She joined the Diet Office as Diet Clerk in 1972, taking calls and orders. She also helped on the tray line. Following the 2008 flood, she helped a lot making food in the trailers and then went to the tray line full-time. More recently, she has been on cold prep food service.

When asked why she has worked here for 65 years, Barb said, “I like the people, the work, and it can be pretty fun.” She has made lifelong friends and memories over the last six decades at CRH. While some times were hard and stressful, she is very happy and proud of her career at CRH.

In her tenure, Barb has worked for six CEOs, beginning with Olive Murphy, and nine Food Service Managers in two different buildings. She has witnessed the arrival of a digital healthcare world, the demolition of the original building, and the 2008 flood, when Jim Bickel saved her car from being flooded. Her fondest memories are of past coworkers and Christmas parties.

"Barb is, and has always been, a valuable part of the Food Service department. Her dedication, humor, wit, and knowledge help the team to provide the best care to our patients and create a place where you can work at for 65 years," said Food Service Manager Sarah Denton. "She is a ball of energy that is well loved in the department and has a playful sense of humor," added Executive Chef Lindsay Shoaf. "She is hardworking, detailed, and particular."

We are so grateful Barb has been a part of the CRH family for 65 years, and we are proud to celebrate her and her commitment and dedication to CRH and our patients.
