Caring Parents

Overview

Crying education is provided to parents, family members and visitors of babies born at Columbus Regional Hospital. The parents receive a free copy of the book ABC: All Babies Cry and are educated about Shaken Baby Syndrome and how to cope with a crying infant. A copy of the Period of Purple Crying DVD is also provided to each family and the newborn receives a purple hat to remind care givers of the important lessons about how to cope with uncontrollable crying. In the community, similar presentations are provided to groups and organizations. The impact of this work is evidenced by the fact that since beginning this program in October 2003 there has been only one incidence of Shaken Baby Syndrome, now called Traumatic Head Injury, resulting in injury or death in Bartholomew County.
