Volunteers in Medicine clinic (VIM) is our community's response to providing access to healthcare for low-income, uninsured adults. Each year, over 1300 individuals receive medical care at the clinic from local doctors, dentists, nurses, specialists, and counselors who volunteer their time and expertise.
The patients seen at VIM do not receive publicly funded health insurance such as Medicare or Medicaid. They are often employed for low wages and reduced hours making health insurance unaffordable. The management of chronic disease has evolved as a patient care priority. The staff and volunteers recognize that combinations of treatment characteristics are needed in order to best care for patients. These include a trusted relationship with a provider, education, pharmaceuticals, and self-care efforts. Patients receive this level of care and support at VIM.
Regular appointments with healthcare professionals and access to medications are critical in reducing complications, risks, and hospitalizations for patients with chronic disease conditions. Responding to the increase in the number of patients with diabetes and other chronic diseases, VIM staff and volunteers added weight management and low-impact exercise programs, life coaches, and group education sessions to promote self-care and healthy lifestyle choices.
Acute primary care (such as ear infections and strep throat)

A resident of Bartholomew County
No health insurance (services, including medications, cannot be provided for Medicaid and mEidcare recipients).
Have a household income at or below 50% of the Bartholomew County median income (adjusted to family size). Proof of income will be required, and eligibility will be determined by clinic staff.
The clinic operates most efficiently on an appointment basis. This allows clinic staff to schedule patients with the most appropriate provider, based on need. Call (812) 376-9750 during clinic hours for scheduling questions.
The average cost of operating the clinic is $1,400 per day. Financial support is essential for the clinic's success. Columbus Regional Health Foundation is the primary funder for Volunteers in Medicine. No tax dollars support VIM. Contributions may be made in two ways:
- A gift to the Foundation's endowment to ensure long-term financial support for the clinic.
- A designated gift to the Volunteers in Medicine Fund.
The annual Reverse Raffle, held every November on the second Friday evening, is another way that the community provides support for VIM.
