ACUTE INPATIENT REHABILITATION

Acute inpatient rehabilitation, also called inpatient rehab or acute rehab, is a specialized hospital

unit or facility dedicated to people recovering from strokes, amputations, brain and spinal cord injuries, fractures, and other debilitating conditions. A higher level of care is required than in other post-acute care facilities, including a need for close medical supervision by a physician, a need for 24-hour rehabilitation nursing, and a multidisciplinary team approach. Three hours of intensive therapy, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and, if necessary, speech therapy are required five days per week. The goal of an acute inpatient rehabilitation program is to help people maximize their function and be as independent as possible.

If the person qualifies, this type of care is paid for by insurance.

NURSING FACILITY – SKILLED CARE

A nursing facility is also called a skilled nursing facility, long-term care facility, extended-care facility, or nursing home. It is a place where people get medical and personal care when they don’t need to be in the hospital, but can’t be taken care of at home. These facilities offer both short-term and long-term care.

SHORT-TERM REHAB OR SKILLED CARE

A short-term stay for rehab or skilled care is for people who are recovering from an illness or injury and need help getting stronger before they can go home. Some people also need special care for things like daily wound care, tube feedings, or IV medications. These facilities offer physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST), medications, and other services to help people get better and go home.

This type of care is paid for by insurance, if the person qualifies, or by private funds.

People with memory issues may qualify for a short-term stay for rehab or skilled care, but may need more supervision than a facility can provide.

LONG-TERM CARE

Long-term care is for people who need extra help with everyday tasks and live in a facility for a long time or even permanently. It is a place that provides medical and personal care for people who do not need to be in the hospital, but cannot be cared for at home. Some facilities also offer special areas or services for those who have memory issues.

Long-term care is paid for by Medicaid, long-term care insurance, or private funds. Medicare does NOT pay for staying in a nursing home for a long time.
