DXA Bone Density Scan

Protecting Bone Health with Precision and Convenience

At Columbus Regional Health’s Breast Health Center, we offer DXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone density scans—a quick, non-invasive test used to assess bone strength and diagnose conditions like osteopenia and osteoporosis. This important screening tool helps determine your risk for fractures and guides your provider in making informed decisions about prevention or treatment.

The test is also sometimes referred to as a DEXA scan or DEXA test.

Why Get a DXA Scan?

Bone health becomes increasingly important as we age, especially for postmenopausal women and individuals with risk factors such as family history, low body weight, previous fractures, or long-term use of certain medications. A DXA scan provides:

  • Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measurement for accurate assessment of bone strength
  • Fracture risk evaluation using FRAX® tools
  • Body composition analysis, including lean mass and body fat percentage—important for understanding metabolic health

What to Expect

  • Fast and simple: The exam typically takes less than 15 minutes
  • Painless and low-radiation: It uses very low levels of X-rays
  • Conveniently located within the Breast Health Center
  • Combine your visit: If you're due for a mammogram, we can often schedule both on the same day

How to Prepare

To ensure accurate results, please avoid the following for 24 hours prior to your scan:

  • Bone-strengthening medications (e.g., for osteoporosis)
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Antacids such as Rolaids or TUMS
