When it comes to surgery, innovation can mean faster recovery, greater precision, and better outcomes for patients. At Columbus Regional Health, Dr. Cory Banaschak is helping lead the way through advanced robotic surgery.
“I perform a variety of robotic procedures,” Dr. Banaschak explains. “These include hernia repairs, gallbladder surgery, and colon surgery for conditions such as colon cancer and diverticulitis.”
Why Robotics?
For patients, robotic surgery offers many of the same benefits as laparoscopic surgery: smaller incisions, less discomfort, and potentially quicker recovery times. For surgeons, the technology provides significant advantages.
“You can see better,” Dr. Banaschak says. “You get 3D visualization, and you can sit down throughout the case, which is more comfortable. That comfort can help prolong a surgeon’s career. All around, it’s beneficial for everyone.”
A New Era of Technology
Recently, CRH invested in two new da Vinci robotic systems, a move Dr. Banaschak describes as “a great commitment to providing the latest and greatest care.”
He compares the upgrade to “going from the original iPhone to the latest version.” The new systems are more intuitive, with enhanced imaging and expanded capabilities. They even allow real-time collaboration with other surgeons, who can see exactly what’s happening during a procedure.
The benefits extend beyond technology. “Having two robots will greatly shorten wait times for patients needing surgery,” Dr. Banaschak says. “There’s also evidence that the newer systems are more efficient, which can reduce operative times and support quicker recoveries.”
Coming Home to Make a Difference
Dr. Banaschak grew up in Greensburg, Indiana, and joining CRH was a chance to return home. “It seemed like a great opportunity,” he recalls. “When I learned there was room to grow a robotic surgery program here, it was an extra bonus.”
Taking the Next Step
Patients interested in learning whether robotic surgery might be right for them can start by talking with their primary care provider or contacting Dr. Banaschak’s office directly. “I’m happy to talk to anyone,” he says.
With expertise, compassion, and cutting-edge tools, Dr. Banaschak and the surgical team at CRH are ensuring that patients in southern Indiana have access to the future of surgery—right here at home.
