Personalized Treatment That Targets Hormone-Sensitive Cancers
At Columbus Regional Health, hormone therapy is an important part of our comprehensive approach to treating certain types of cancer. This treatment is designed to block or lower the hormones that fuel the growth of specific cancers, such as breast or prostate cancer.
How Hormone Therapy Works
Some cancers grow in response to natural hormones like estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone. Hormone therapy works by:
- Reducing hormone levels in the body
- Blocking hormone receptors on cancer cells
- Slowing or stopping cancer cell growth
It can be used alone or alongside other treatments such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy.
Cancers We Treat with Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy is commonly used to treat:
- Breast cancer (estrogen/progesterone receptor-positive)
- Prostate cancer (testosterone-sensitive)
- Occasionally, other hormone-driven cancers such as endometrial or ovarian cancer
Your care team will determine if hormone therapy is appropriate based on your cancer type, stage, and hormone receptor status.
What to Expect
Hormone therapy is typically given as:
- Oral medications
- Injections
- Surgical removal of hormone-producing organs (in rare cases)
Like any treatment, hormone therapy can cause side effects. These may include hot flashes, fatigue, changes in mood, or effects on bone health. Our team will closely monitor your response and help manage any symptoms to keep you as comfortable as possible.
