You know the feeling. You’ve just arrived home from work, or you’re curled up on the couch watching a movie. Suddenly, the urge for candy, chips or pretzels hits you hard.

While giving in to these cravings is fun in the moment, it actually hurts your health over time. Keep your body and your taste buds happy with these heart-smart snack swaps.

If you crave: Potato chips and onion dip
Try: Mash an avocado and mix it with lemon and lime juice, diced tomato, chopped onion, cilantro, salt and pepper for homemade guacamole. Pair it with raw vegetable sticks, whole-grain crackers or baked tortilla chips.

If you crave: An ice cream sundae
Try: Scoop some sorbet, sherbet or lowfat frozen yogurt. Or top non-fat yogurt with fresh fruit and granola.

If you crave: Buttery popcorn
Try: Grab a handful of unsalted nuts, such as walnuts, almonds or cashews.

Another way to avoid unhealthy cravings:
Stop and think whether you’re actually hungry. A lot of times, feeling anxious, bored or tired is the real reason we reach for a snack. Try to find non-food options in those moments. For example, you could call a friend or go outside for a quick walk. It might surprise you how much better you feel!
